For any copyright, please send me a message. “I was on the phone call,” Mike Pompeo said Wednesday afternoon in Rome, in reference to the July 25 conversation in which Donald Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate one of his top political rivals, Joe Biden. Pompeo’s admission, which marks the first time the secretary of state has publicly acknowledged his involvement in the now infamous phone call, comes amid escalating tensions between Capitol Hill and Foggy Bottom and draws the top Trump confidant into the center of House Democrats’ accelerating impeachment inquiry. Now, Pompeo is on the frontline of the battle between the legislative and executive branches. To the public, it was a stunning admission, given his early posturing. Pompeo had feigned ignorance of the Trump–Zelensky call as recently as September 22 in an interview with Martha Raddatz of ABC News and ignored reports that he was, indeed, on the phone call in the days since while doubling down on his defense of the president. But on Tuesday, the situation began to spiral out of his control as he clashed with House investigators. The top diplomat responded haughtily to a subpoena from the House Oversight, Intelligence, and Foreign Affairs committees. “I am concerned with aspects of your request, described more fully below, that can be understood only as an attempt to intimidate, bully, and treat improperly the distinguished professionals of the Department of State, including several career Foreign Service Officers,” Pompeo wrote. By Tuesday evening, Pompeo was fully embroiled in the churning drama. In a letter to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, the chairmen wrote that they believed Pompeo had a “conflict of interest” because of reports that he had been on the Zelensky call. “Given the secretary’s own potential role, and reports of other State Department officials being involved in or knowledgeable of the events under investigation,” they wrote, “the committee may infer that he is trying to cover up illicit activity and misconduct, including by the president.” And then an official on the House Foreign Affairs Committee confirmed shortly after 5 p.m. that Ambassador Kurt Volker, who resigned as the U.S. special representative for Ukraine last week, will appear before Congress Thursday. And Masha Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine whose sudden recall earlier this year has drawn sharp scrutiny, is scheduled to appear before the committee on October 11.
