Located in the county of Essex, and around 25 miles east, and slightly north, of central London, is the town of Billericay (pronounced 'bill-uh-RICK-ey').
The first recorded reference to Billericay dates back to 1291 where it was written as 'Byllyrica'. This is believed to be from a medieval Latin word, bellerīca, meaning 'dyehouse or tanhouse'.
It is believed that Billericay was a resting stop for pilgrims travelling to Canterbury during the 13th and 14th centuries. Presumably they would have spent the night in Billericay before crossing the River Thames at Tilbury. The large number of inns in the town hints at this being the case.
In 1381 the Battle of Billericay took place. This occurred during the Peasants' Revolt of that same year. The boy king Richard II's soldiers defeated the Essex rebels near a wood northeast of Billericay, thought to have been Norsey Wood.
It is claimed that the Pilgrim Fathers met up on Billericay High Street prior to their voyage across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in 1620. One of the passengers was Christopher Martin, a merchant and property owner from Billericay, who became the official Ship's Governor and purchasing agent, procuring ships supplies for the voyage. Three other passengers were also from Billericay. All four died shortly after their arrival at Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In spite of this, other Billericay residents went on to set sail for the New World. The town of Billerica, Massachusetts was established in 1655 and was named after the settlers' place of birth, here in Essex.
In 1889 the railway arrived in Billericay courtesy of the Great Eastern Railway. Today it provides direct access to Southend-on-Sea to the east and London Liverpool Street to the west, which is accessible in just over half an hour, making Billericay a practical commuter town for those working in the capital.
Famous people from Billericay include singer Alison Moyet, swimmer Mark Foster and model David Gandy. The town is referenced in the 1977 song by Ian Dury - Billericay Dickie. The sitcom Gavin & Stacey is set in both Billericay and Barry in Wales, although the Billericay scenes were filmed in Wales.
