40 years since this kick ass anthem was a worldwide hit! 'Rebel Yell' by Billy Idol was released in the final couple of months of 1983. Weirdly it was not a success in Britain until 1985 and it never really took off big time in the singer's American homeland: only making #46 on the Billboard chart and #29 on the Cashbox list. 'Rebel Yell which was also the album title, fared best downunder and in New Zealand where it peaked at #7 and #3 respectively. I recall vividly the radio and videoplay for this great record.
'Rebel Yell' entered the Aussie chart in March of 1984, and would spend 20 weeks there, with 5 of those in the Top 10 and making it the 35th best seller of the year. The long player did pretty well too. Billy had been immensely popular since 1982's 'Hot In The City' and he would continue to storm the charts and the culture overall for the rest of the 1980's with his attitude, swagger and rock anthems.
