It was at Chickamauga that Union General George Thomas got his nickname the Rock of Chickamauga. His spectacular defense of the Union line and Snodgrass Hill earned him that name and it would be his exemplary military abilities that would land him the position of commander of the Army of the Cumberland. The Battle of Chickamauga gained him national fame and made the United States take notice of this Virginian who was loyal to the US.
