Basilosaurus Animated Size Comparison
Facts:
It lived 40.4 to 33.9 million years ago.
It was first discovered in 1830s.
Basilosaurus means "king lizard" as it was initially believed to be a reptilian sea monster similar to a Plesiosaurus or Mosasaurus.
It had a smaller brain compared to modern whales and lacked a melon on its head.
It had hollow vertebrae making it buoyant, and it swam on the surface in an odd motion.
Basilosaurus still had an elbow joint in its flipper like a seal, and even had its back leg fins.
It chewed its food before swallowing based on evidence of heavy wear on its teeth, unlike modern cetaceans that swallow their food whole.
It was and apex predator which hunted sharks, fish, and other whales.
It had and estimated bite with a force of 3,600 pounds per square inch!
