Drawing on archival discoveries in the former Soviet and Western archives, the presentation focuses on the Soviet intelligence community’s efforts to discover the extent and patterns of the mass extermination of Jews from 1941 onwards, first on Soviet soil and then throughout Europe, and to place these discoveries in the service of the Kremlin's domestic and foreign policies. This heretofore little-studied subject enhances our understanding of the Soviet reaction to the Shoah (Holocaust) and the inner workings of the Soviet secret services.
