I am ever learning about how to be a better holistic chicken mama. 🐔 Here are some of my top tips for beginners:
1. Herbs and more herbs to enrich your chickens health and egg quality. (Oregano, thyme, rosemary, calendula, tarragon, lavender, dill, mint, basil, etc etc) Many of these grow abundantly without much intervention, and will come back year after year.
2. Weeds are the most nutrient rich, inexpensive, and desired food by my chickens. (Think, nettles, dandelions, smart weed, plantain, clover, chickweed) These weeds grow prolifically and don't need tending.
3. Dust bath - give your chicks an area where they can roll in sand, wood ash, and herbs, in order to clean themselves. Adding herbs and diatomaceous earth (inexpensive) will help ward off bad bugs.
4. Healthy scraps - supplement chicken feed with healthy scrap like fruits, veggies, seeds, garlic, oats. Make sure to check that the foods you are giving your chickens are safe for them.
5. Tea - every few days I give our chickies a bowl of tea with dried herbs and some vitamins, apple cider vinegar, and probiotic powder. Apple cider vinegar is excellent for your chickens and will help boost their resilience to all sorts of ails.
