The biblical city in the north of the country is at the same time one of the oldest in Israel. Its settlement began 8,000 to 7,000 years ago. The complex of city ruins is part of Beit She’an National Park opened to the public, and it is one of the most important and largest archaeological sites in the country. Before an earthquake destroyed ancient Beit She’an in 749 AD, around 40,000 residents lived there.
On the elevated mound, you can explore the remains of the Canaanite and Egyptian cities. In the 15th century BC, the area became a center of the Egyptian imperial administration of the region for more than 300 years. Many artefacts were found at the site, such as the Egyptian inscription on the white stone. From this period the best preserved is the Egyptian governor’s house, built in the 12th century BC.
The lovers of the Roman period will be impressed by the remains of the metropolis. There exists a roman theater, built during the late 2nd century AD. Originally it had seating for 6,000 spectators, of which is only one-third excellently preserved to this day. Even today it is still possible to see the stage, which was richly decorated with columns and statues.
Beside the theatre, on the southwestern side, is located the largest of the two bathhouses in Beit She’an. This 1,600-year-old public complex is still relatively well-preserved, and you can find their places for working out as well as for relaxing. For instance, hot and tepid bathing halls with an underfloor heating system which pumps hot air under the floor and heats the waters.
While sightseeing this fascinating place, do not overlook the remarkable colorful floor mosaics. Ranging from the unique 6th century AD Mosaic of Tyche - Roman goddess of good fortune and patron of the city to the colorful plant mosaics in the Byzantine Agora, which was a meeting area and a marketplace.
