Wanting to help others is good, at least on the surface. But what happens when you (knowingly or unknowingly) help others more to help yourself than to help them?

Note: I'm not advocating for greed or pure selfishness. I don't think you should put yourself first with complete disregard for others. I just wanted to make these three points:

1) We should stop lying to ourselves and to others and admit that we do things transactionally more often than not, which is usually fine.
2) Helping others just so you look good or at least so that you don't look as bad as you would otherwise isn't altruistic, it's selfish. The bad kind of selfish.
3) Putting yourself first is often times the least selfish thing you can do. For example, rather than people-pleasing or over-extending yourself to keep others "happy," prioritize your needs and desires. Only when you're at your best can you effectively show up for others.

Note #2: It's doesn't always have to get to the point of being transactional, but I do think relationships (ideally all, but realistaclly at least long-term ones) have to be reciprocal to be healthy and for everyone involved to feel fulfilled.
