Hello and welcome to the action of Day 3 between India and South Africa. After a one-sided affair in the ODI format India and the Proteas face off for one-off Test series starting today in Chennai. The white-ball match was really a tough pull to digest for the Proteas as they were sloppy in all-three departments. They looked undercooked in pressure situations and lot of the players underperformed as well.
They’ll hope the red-ball game brings change in fortune and a better performance from them. India on the other hand will be confident coming into the Test match. Talking about confidence one player who is on Cloud 9 right now is Smriti Mandhana. A consecutive centuries and a 90 in the third game she would be itching don the whites and get out to bat once again. India overall have been solid and look favourites as we gear up for the first ball of the match.
The women's cricket action is set to shift southward as India Women prepare to face South Africa Women in the next leg of their all-format series. The two teams will battle it out at Chennai's renowned MA Chidambaram Stadium a venue steeped in cricketing history. After whitewashing the Proteas in the ODIs India's women are ready to switch gears for some good old Test cricket. This solitary red-ball clash is a chance for both teams to show what they're made of in the long haul.
Looking at their recent Test outings both India and South Africa last faced off against Australia but with very different outcomes. The Indian squad pulled off a stunner taking down the Aussies on home turf. Meanwhile the Proteas had a rough time in Perth getting handed a pretty brutal loss. When it comes to their past encounters India's women have had the edge over South Africa. They've come out on top in both their previous Test matchups against the Proteas.
The Indian Women squad will be led by the dynamic skipper Harmanpreet Kaur along with her trusty lieutenant Smriti Mandhana backing her up as vice-captain. Mandhana’s coming on the back of three back-to-back brilliant performances with the bat graced with two centuries for good measure in the ODI-W series. The team will be expecting her to stay consistent and solidify the top order along with the aggressive partner of Shafali Varma.
The Indian middle order's looking rock solid. You've got skipper Kaur herself ready to do some damage plus the talented Jemimah Rodrigues bringing her A-game. Throw in the explosive wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh and the ever-reliable all rounder Deepti Sharma and you've got a lineup that can give bowlers a tough day at business. Joining Deepti in the spin department will be the likes of Sneh Rana the talented Saika Ishaque and the crafty left-armer Rajeshwari Gayakwad.
Whereas Renuka Singh Pooja Vastrakar and Arundhati Reddy will be the pace trio to complement the spinners. Laura Wolvaardt's gearing up to rally her Proteas shaking off that ODI series disappointment. She'll be looking to hit the reset button and lead her squad into this Test with a fresh energy.
Pitch Report | Woorkeri Raman: "We saw the South African batters being challenged by the Indian spinners at the Chidambaram Stadium yesterday. The spinners had a lot of purchase from the surface they made the ball turn jump and the variable bounce made life difficult for the batters as well. Sneh Rana was brilliant she was the pick of the bowlers and she was ably supported by Deepti Sharma and Rajeshwari Gayakwad. They were brilliant bowled consistent lines and lengths troubled the batters repeatedly. What do the batters on this kind of a surface? We saw Marizanne Kapp stay back in the crease and ensure she didn't commit herself too soon which made the bowlers give her opportunities to score. Whenever the opportunity presented itself she put them away beautifully.
