Operation Greif: This WWII Mission Redefined The Rules Of War!
In December 1944, after days confined to quarters, General Eisenhower stormed out of his office, angrily declaring that he didn’t care who tried to kill him.
Eisenhower’s outburst was triggered by Operation Greif, a German mission that sent Allied troops spinning out into paranoia, seeing saboteurs around every corner. Dreamed up by Adolph Hitler himself, Greif was a key part of the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler’s attempt to break the Allied advance into the Reich. It caused confusion and Allied friendly fire, just as the Germans launched their big advance.
The tactics used in Operation Greif led to allegations of war crimes and a trial in which some of the Allies’ own tricks were exposed, debunking myths about the honour with which the war was fought. But for the German soldiers dressing in Allied uniforms, there was far more at stake – could they delay the invasion of their homeland?
