Ukrainian military spokesperson Valeriy Shershen claimed that the country’s armed forces have retaken the village of Blahodatne on Sunday, in the “first results of (their) counteroffensive” against Russia.
"With all responsibility, I have been authorised to declare the liberation of Blahodatne village,” Shershen said.
“This was done by fighters of the 68th Jaeger (middleweight infantry) separate brigade 'Oleksy Dovbusha',” he added.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed counteroffensive action against Russia the day prior, during a press conference with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — who made an unexpected appearance in Kyiv to announce $500 million more in support for Ukraine’s military.
“Appropriate counteroffensive and defensive actions are taking place in Ukraine. I will not say in detail at what stage they are. I believe we will certainly feel all this,” Zelenskyy said during the conference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said, on June 9, that so far, Ukrainian troops had not “achieved the goals assigned to them in any sector” during a supposed counteroffensive.
