Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Yet, even 1996, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC)’s Dr. Elsa-Grace Giardina’s proposal to study cardiovascular disease in men and women was rejected by the NIH because there were too many women involved in the study, “when everyone knows heart disease is a disease of men.”
This led Dr. Giardina to start Columbia’s Center for Women's Cardiovascular Health, and raise awareness for heart disease in women.
