Speaking to dozens of area ministers on May 5, Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser made the case for his Schools First initiative, and talked about urban sprawl. Noting that suburban cities were building out as the central city of Kansas City lost residents, the mayor noted the waste of resources. He said the region was building the infrastructure for a city of 5 million by 2040, but wouldn't grow past 2.5 million. The Funk dubbed it a catastrophe, both for Kansas City and for the metropolitan area.
