During the 20th century most of the Aral Sea's water sources were diverted for irrigation of agriculture which in turn resulted in toxic runoffs causing pollution and damaging the sea's ecosystem. Eventually the Aral Sea dried out and the salt and chemicals dissolved in its water were carried out through out the region by dust storms. The Aral Sea was also used as a bio-weapon testing ground through a facility located on a large island.
