TU Delft TV - Einstein Entanglement
On a special day in 1935, one of the most brilliant minds to walk the earth discovered a problem he couldn't solve with the tools available to him at that time: Einstein calculated that two particles could be interconnected in a way, that they share a single identity. This meant that electrons would be exchanging information at a speed faster than light. Einstein thought he was mistaken and declared it to be impossible. His mind was far ahead of his time, and back then no experiment could be performed to prove whether this was true or not.
Nowadays we call this entanglement: a phenomena that is predicted by quantum theory. According to the theory, two particles can have a link and share an identity: this makes them behave as one.
In 2016 we do have the means to perform experiments on entanglement. The very first experiment of it's kind was performed Delft: meet Bob and Alice. Bob and Alice are diamonds, and they both have their own cozy lab. Bob and Alice are used to emit and catch quantum particles: the diamonds emit light, the light from the diamonds is caught and lead through fibers over a distance of 1km.
Have Bob and Alice proven entanglement? If so, this means that in the future a quantum internet could be set up: an unshakable and unhackable version of the internet we have today. Curious? Check out the video!
