When it's hot (100 degrees), and hasn't rained in months in Southern Oregon - it's the absolute best time of the year to get up into the surrounding mountains.
There's a lot of great places to go, but Mt. Ashland is one of my favorites. Even though it's the highest peak in the Siskiyou Mts at 7,536 ft. it's very easy to get to - just off of I-5. You don't need a 4X4 to get to the trails; you don't even have to get out of your car to see amazing views.
One of my favorite things about it, is that the back side (west side) of Mt Ashland has loads of wild flowers well into August. The spot we go to in this video isn't named on google maps, but I've always called it Needles.
There are numerous trails, many of them easy, including a very easy section of the Pacific Crest Trail. As well as Mt. Ashland campground, which is not quite primitive camping, but close.
The Mt. Ashland Ski Area is good for mountain biking, or for a more easy bike ride you can just use the main roads - which I've done many times with my kids.
