On April 7, 2021, temperatures dropped to -5°C in the areas of Chablis and Bordeaux in France — farmers say this will seriously affect wine production, and losses could range up to 80%.
Cold snaps have been occurring earlier in the year, leaving young vines and developed fruit vulnerable to freezing. Many farmers attribute this to climate change. 2017 marking the lowest wine output in history.
France’s government has declared an agricultural disaster, with Agricultural Minister Julien Denormandie announcing that this cold spell has unleashed the biggest agricultural disaster of this century.
