Today we try our hand at Chip Grafting.
I brought home two twigs of what I'm going to call "Cow Killer Apple" from a fencing job today. It's a 50 or 60 year old apple tree in what is now cattle pasture. It may have at one time been an orchard, because the existing apple trees sort of hint at regular spacing. My neighbor, who runs his cattle there, lost a cow last year because the apples from this tree were so good, she gorged herself on them and died of bloat. I tried one today that was just starting to redden up, and I believe it will make an excellent cider apple and is already an excellent eating apple IMHO.
