Welcome back to our rewilding series. In this episode, we will be discussing another UK rewilding case study. In this video, we will be discussing the great bustard.

The great bustard is a large bird with a height of 75 to 105 cm and a weight of up to 18 kilograms. These handsome birds are robust but stately looking. Adult males have a bulging neck and a heavy chest, with a characteristically cocked tail. The breeding plumage of males includes white whiskers that are 20cm long, and their back and tail are more vivid in colour. They have bands of feathers on their breast and lower neck that are russet coloured and become brighter and wider as they mature. These birds walk with an upright stance, and despite their huge size, they can actually fly. In fact, great bustards are one of the heaviest birds alive today that can fly.

The Great Bustard was hunted to national extinction in the 19th century and the last bird was shot in 1832, however, there is good news for the once beloved bird.
