J. Antonio Quiros, M.D., chief of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at MUSC Children’s Health, discusses the advantages of balloon-assisted enteroscopy, a form of deep enteroscopy that enables the physician to explore much further into the small intestine than would be possible with traditional endoscopy. Balloon-assisted enteroscopy offers a cost-effective and minimally invasive way to identify the source of occult gastrointestinal bleeding, place feeding tubes, biopsy and/or remove intestinal tumors/polyps, determine whether a tumor is malignant, retrieve foreign objects (i.e., retained video capsules, magnets), manage vascular bleeding lesions and explore other small bowel abnormalities.
Balloon-assisted enteroscopy allows both diagnosis and treatment of a small bowel abnormality during the same endoscopic session. It is best performed in children at high-volume pediatric centers, such as MUSC Children’s Health, which offer the specialized nursing and equipment needed to manage children with complex intestinal diseases.
