BIO:
Eric Santamaria M.D. is Professor of Reconstructive Microsurgery of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and Attending Surgeon at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hospital General Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez and the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia in Mexico City. After completing his training at Gea Hospital, he spent one year as a fellow with his mentor Dr. Fernando Ortiz-Monasterio. Afterward, he did a 3-year fellowship in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, in Taipei, Taiwan, and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He has been a fellowship director for 20 consecutive years, training more than 40 one-year microsurgery fellows and close to 100 visiting fellows from various countries.
As an accomplished clinician, his expertise focuses on surgery of the Breast, Head and Neck, and extremity reconstruction. His research interests focus predominantly on Pre laminated Free Flaps and Perforator Flaps.
Widely published, with more than 43 peer-reviewed journal articles and 15
book chapters Dr. Santamaria also actively participates in senior leadership activities of many international and national professional societies and associations. He has been elected 1st president of the Fu-Chan Wei Club, 1st President of the Association of Latin-American Microsurgery and Chairman of the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery Meeting, to be held in Cancun, Mexico in 2021.
