You all asked, I delivered… sort of! Once again we had an adverse result to our sting test! Velvet ants, or cow killers, are flightless solitary wasps that feed on nectar, water, and small insects. Supposedly Justin Schmidt ranked these Hymenopterans as the 3rd most painful stinging insect after the bullet ant and tarantula hawk wasp respectively. Note how this animal was EXTREMELY reluctant to sting in defense and much more interested in fleeing than to confront me. Many male velvet ants possess wings and can look MUCH different than the females. This female we filmed was one of the largest velvet ants I’ve personally ever encountered; but I do have to say I am quite disappointed in the sting! I hope we’re able to find something that truly deserves the title “Worst Sting in the World” soon! Wish us luck and thanks for watching!
