The Fetterman Fight was an armed engagement between a combined force of Native warriors and the U.S. Army on 21 December 1866 during the Plains Indian Wars in the American West. The battle was fought on the Bozeman Trail north of Fort Phil Kearny, Dakota Territory, near present Story, Wyoming. In a masterfully planned ambush, Native warriors destroyed a force of seventy-nine soldiers and two civilians.
In history the battle is called several names: Fetterman Fight, Fetterman Massacre, Battle at Fort Phil Kearny, etc. It was the greatest Army defeat in battle in a ten-year span between the Civil War and the Battle of the Little Bighorn (Custer's Last Stand) in 1876.
