On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are pointing fingers at each other over rising gas prices. Republicans say the Biden Administration lacks an energy policy, while Democrats blame oil companies and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Senator Chuck Schumer says, "The U.S. is a a major oil producer. We only get 1% of any imports from Russia. Now the bottom line is this: the real problem with increased gas prices is gouging and monopolies." Republicans point to U.S. energy self-sufficiency in 2019 during the Trump Administration, when oil production was higher. They fault President Joe Biden. Representative Kevin McCarthy says, "The reasons Americans are paying so much is bad domestic policy. These aren't Putin prices, they're President Biden's prices." Many lawmakers favor a long-term commitment to producing domestic energy, starting with President Biden reversing course. Some lawmakers favor suspending the federal gas tax, for at least a while, as long as savings wind up in the pockets of U.S. consumers.
