Welcome to Hoaxy! Hoaxy is a public tool for visualizing the spread of fact-checking and claims on social media. You can use it a bit like Google.
Let’s say that you want to learn more about the claim that an asteroid has been spotted that will hit the earth and destroy civilization.
First, type in ‘asteroid’ then hit search. This brings up a list of claims and fact checks that could be relevant to them.
You can click on the text to go directly to them, but let’s focus on visualizing them for now. So click the check boxes of the stories you want to show up in your visualization and then click the ‘Visualize’ button. Here you can see how the fact checks and claims you’ve selected have spread over time and how they’re spreading. You can zoom in on areas of interest and even click on Twitter users to find more information about what they tweeted and who retweeted it.
Thanks for trying out Hoaxy! We hope you find it useful.
