First up, let’s talk about T-bill interest rates. The latest 6-month T-bill tranche has a cut-off yield of 3.75% per annum. That’s a pretty attractive rate for a low-risk investment, wouldn’t you say? Now, mark your calendars because the next 1-year T-bill auction is on April 18, 2024, and the following 6-month T-bill auction starts on April 25, 2024.
Now, you might be wondering, ‘How can I get in on this action?’ Well, it’s simpler than you think. You can purchase T-bills using cash or your CPF funds. Let’s break it down.”
If you’re using cash, you’ll need a bank account with one of the local banks and an individual CDP account with Direct Crediting Services activated. Apply through your bank’s internet banking portal or ATMs. It’s that easy!”
For CPF investments, you’ll need a CPF Investment Account with one of the agent banks. Apply for T-bills through your CPFIS-OA agent bank’s internet banking portal or in person at a branch. Remember, you need to have a minimum sum in your Ordinary and Special Accounts to be eligible.”
Now, let’s talk about calculating the yield. The yield is the return you’ll get on your investment, and for T-bills, it’s calculated based on the discount rate. Here’s the formula you’ll use:”
Yield=(Purchase PriceFace Value−Purchase Price)×Days to Maturity365×100
Let’s say you buy a T-bill with a face value of S$1,000 for S$975. It matures in 182 days. Plug those numbers into the formula, and voilà, you’ve got your yield!”
And there you have it, folks! You’re now ready to start investing in T-bills and boosting your financial portfolio. Remember, always do your due diligence and consult with a financial advisor if you need personalized advice.”
