And it is with Luciano that we begin our tour into the mob underworld of New York.
It is not possible to have a good understanding of organized crime in the US without having studied Charlie Luciano. Born Salvatore Lucania on the outskirts of Palermo in the poor Sicilian town of Lercara Friddi in 1897, he changed his name to Charles Luciano and received the nickname Lucky either due to his gambling exploits or his uncanny ability to escape death, surviving numerous attempts on his life by rival gangsters.
