A Bookseller was a craftsman who, by request, made books by joining and sewing the sheets that came from the copyist with a cover - some were themselves copyists. In Portugal booksellers organized the profession early on, as the trade was mentioned in the letter of D. João II of August 27, 1539. Yet, prior to 1740 the term “bookstore” was a synonym of library. We see the term “bookstore” as “a place that sells books” on February 25th, 1740, through an announcement on the “Gazeta de Lisboa”. In addition to booksellers, one sees the emergence of book merchants – on which a diverse set of activities can be found (editing, importing and distribution) – which paid licenses whilst officials were exempt of so to sell the products of their trade].
On today’s video we will precisely look at the world oldest bookstore that can be found in Portugal
