As Russian forces consolidate their hold on the Chechen capital Grozny, rebel fighters are preparing for a long guerrilla struggle, moving from the cities to the hills.
And in a sign that the fighting is far from over, the Chechen President Dzokhar Dudayev has again warned that the war could spread to Russian cities.
These Chechen partisans are hoping that their prayers for independence will be answered.
The Russians may have won a tenuous hold on the capital Grozny, but the Chechens still control the countryside.
They have gone to the hills in order to train for what they expect to be a prolonged guerrilla struggle against the Russians.
On Saturday, the Chechen President Dzokhar Dudayev repeated threats that the war could spread throughout the former Soviet Union. Security in Moscow and other major cities has already been stepped up.
Moscow has continued its assault on the capital, Grozny, despite a European mission which aims to investigate allegations of excessive brutality on both sides.
These fighters claim that these documents belonged to dead Russian soldiers.
As the war continues, these soldiers head back to continue with their training - something they hope will help them win this war - and independence.
