At COP26, the United States and the European Union, along with initiative partners, announced the Global Methane Pledge.
The Pledge is a major effort to curb global methane emissions in an attempt to keep global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius. Over 100 countries have signed the Pledge, to reduce methane emissions globally by 30 percent by 2030 (from 2020 levels). Additionally, a host of philanthropies have committed $328 million to support methane mitigation strategies as part of the Global Methane Pledge.
The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program is very pleased to host Mark Brownstein, Senior Vice President of Energy at the Environmental Defense Fund, for a discussion on the Global Methane Pledge and its implications for global climate action. Hosted by Nikos Tsafos, CSIS James R. Schlesinger Chair for Energy and Geopolitics.
Beyond COP26 is an event series examining the most important initiatives and developments from the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). Each event focuses on implications for the future of global climate action as countries move to fulfill their commitments.
