THE SONG
Originally written in 1961 as the Belgian song "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man") by singer-songwriter Jacques Brel with lyrics rewritten /translated in 1963 by singer-poet Rod McKuen portraying a dying man's farewell to his loved ones.
Terry Jacks rewrote the lyrics, although he is uncredited for it
In 1970, The Beach Boys asked Jacks to produce the song for them but according to Jacks the Beach Boys were fighting and arguing so much between each other that he never could actually get a finished recording.
Before releasing this song, Terry Jacks had considerable success in his native Canada as half of the duo The Poppy Family (Which Way You ‘Goin Billy) with his wife, Susan Jacks
On March 2, 1974, the song began a three-week run at number one atop the Hot 100 and remained in the top 40 until almost Memorial Day weekend
Despite his perceived deficiencies when it comes to singing, Terry won the Juno award (the Canadian Grammys) for Male Vocalist of the Year in 1974.
This song also won for Contemporary Single of the Year and Pop Music Single of the Year, and Best Selling Single.
