(26 Aug 1976) The appointment of Raymond Barre as the new Prime Minister of France had an immediate effect in raising the value of the Franc on international money markets. His appointment in succession to Jaqcues Chirac had raised doubts about the continuing support of the Gaullist majority in the coalition government of French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, Barre insisted that he had their support.
