Grinding discs are ideal abrasive products for rough grinding jobs where large quantities of material need to be removed. Norton offers a wide variety of portable grinding and cutting discs for cutting-off, snagging, grinding down and smoothing weld seams, cleaning metal before welding and levelling metal surfaces before welding.
In this video, Norton expert Paul Gray explains the four main components of grinding wheels and their functions.
Grinding and cutting discs are made from:
1. Fiberglass reinforcement – helps to increase the mechanical resistance when in use.
2. Abrasive grains - provide the essential functionality of a grinding wheel because they remove material from the workpiece. Commonly used abrasives are ceramic alumina, zirconia alumina, aluminium oxide and silicon carbide. Grains also come in various sizes
3. Bond - the substance that causes the abrasive grains to adhere to the wheel.
4. Metal ring –which allows the disc to be safely mounted onto the machine. It also contains the disc's validity date.
