💓 Lesson 12 Home Away from Home
A home is not just the house or apartment you live in. It is the place where you belong. Home is not always where you are born either. Every day people travel across the world and make new homes in new places. Humankind has been traveling like this for thousands of years. In fact, many scientists believe our original home was in Africa and that humankind descended from a small group of ancient travelers.
Long before modern humans there were other kinds of animals that were much like people. These weren’t monkeys or apes, but rather animals that walked upright and used tools. These creatures evolved into modern humans about 200,000 years ago.
A small group of modern humans, maybe only around 150 of them, left Africa about 70,000 years ago. Over the next 50,000 years they populated the rest of the world. South Asia (50,000 years ago); Australia (40,000 years ago); Europe, Korea, and Japan (30,000 years ago); and then lastly North America either 30 or 15 thousand years ago.
These early humans traveled from place to place looking for food and shelter. Now, most cultures make a single place their home. They live, eat and reproduce there, creating their own society. These societies generally stay put, but with the rise of modern transportation, humans are on the move again.
Like ancient humans, modern humans travel to find food and shelter, but also for many other reasons. Some flee from wars and famine. Others travel because their homes have been destroyed. And a number of travelers are just curious and looking for new experiences.
Whatever your reasons for traveling, remember that we are all citizens of the world. The world is our home and we are all here together.
