Media: multimedia installation with emotion recognition software and real-time generative visuals
__________
Project description:
Smiling, frowning, or raising eyebrows can tell a lot about the way a person feels. Accurately reading body language and facial expressions is a necessary behavior for humans who want to communicate easier and better. Acquired by extensive practice and experience, lately this feature has been implemented into AI systems. With applications in fields such as surveillance, entertainment and art, facial analysis systems already operate in our environment without us being aware of it.
AImotion is an interactive multimedia installation which invites participants to an intimate non-verbal dialogue with a machine constantly analyzing their face and outputting a visual response.
AImotion tackles the idea of a reductionist AI system that reads 7 basic human emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust, and neutral) and associates colors and abstract visual structures to them. The intensity of the colors is directly proportional with the intensity of their emotions. ‘Anger’ is in bright red, while ‘happy’ is in calm orange.
Though abstract, the generative visual depictions are reminiscent of familiar shapes and patterns that could amplify or influence the participant’s emotional state.
Throughout the interaction, the meaning of ‘emotions’ ceases to function as simple labels, but rather becomes an ongoing performance in which introspection is highly encouraged. To what extent are my facial features enough for an AI to truly reveal and influence my current emotional state? How would I feel if I knew I was constantly analyzed? Would I try to express a certain emotion more?
