Before he became Mister Sinister, Nathaniel Essex was a 19th century scientist who was profoundly effected by Charles Darwin's 1859 masterpiece On the Origin of Species. He visited one of Darwin's lectures where he suggested to him that the accumulation of what he called mutations drives the development of the human species as well as all others. Darwin showed sympathy towards Essex, knowing that both their theories were considered heresies. One of those opponents of Darwin's and Essex's views was James Xavier, the grandfather of Charles Xavier. Little did he know that his own grandson would one day be a living proof of the evolution of mankind into a new species, and that he would wage war with the social Lamarckist Mister Sinister.
