Emergency services and volunteers began clearing damage in Minneapolis on Saturday after violent unrest the previous night saw businesses left burnt out and ransacked.
Protesters ignored a curfew in the city on Friday to take to the streets for a fourth consecutive night, amid anger stoked by the death of George Floyd in police custody continued.
Already 500 National Guard soldiers had been mobilized in and around Minneapolis, where Floyd died and an officer faced charges Friday in his death.
But after another night of watching fires burn and businesses ransacked, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said early Saturday that he was moving to activate more than 1,000 more and was considering federal help.
Thousands had also demonstrated peacefully, demanding justice for Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer pressed a knee into his neck.
