Margashirsha is the 9th lunar month in Hindu calendar, which falls around November-December. In Puranas, the month is mentioned as ‘Maasonam Margashirshoham’ meaning the auspicious month of Margashiram. The month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that God’s descend on earth during this month. Performing Lakshmi puja and observing fast on Thursdays are considered highly rewarding and blissful for devotees. The vrat is observed from sunrise to sunset. On the day of Mahalakshmi vrat, devotees clean their homes and decorate the front yard with rangoli and by lighting diyas.
Take a kalash and fill it with rice and water which symbolises prosperity.
Keep a chaurang or a small stool facing east or west. Decorate it with Rangoli. Draw Devi’s feet with Rangoli.
Decorate the Copper or silver kalash Add water, a coin, betel, durva and a coin in the Kalash.
Place a coconut on top of it and mall branches of 5 different plants surrounding the coconut. apply haldi-kumkum (turmeric and vermillion) on the 8sides of kalash representing 8 dishas or directions.
Place the kalash on a plate filled with rice.
Place a flower or a garland on the coconut. You can add Devi’s mask on the coconut and jewels to decorate as if she is wearing them.
Also keep Lashmi Yantra on the Chaurang.
Recite Mahalakshmi Vart Kathahant, chant Shri Mahalakshmi aarti and Mahalakshmi Ashtak in praise of the goddess.
Offer sweets and fruits as Naivedya or bhog to the goddess.
Apply Haldi Kumkum, offer flowers, Panchamrut. Offer Naivedya, fruits. Read the vrat katha, Listen to the Kamanapurty stotra, Ashtashloki stotra, Vaibhavlakshmi Namavali.
Ask for her blessings and desires to be fulfilled.
Ask for her forgiveness post pooja and listen to Avahan.
Last, perform Aarti singing the praises of the Goddess. Observe fast whole day. Eat Fruits, milk, water, buttermilk.
In the evening offer full meal naivedya to the Goddess and later feed the cow with Devi’s Naivedya so that it reaches her.
Eat the meal with your family with peace and happiness.
The Goddess will listen to your prayers and will shower her blessings on you and your family
Next day fling some Akshata [ rice with Kumkum] on the deity, pray her and put water from kalash in any water body or pour it in a pot of a plant. Keep 5 branches at 5 places in the house.
