Water is a precious resource and the efficient application of irrigation water to vineyards is key for environmental sustainability and vineyard profitability. This panel-style webinar brings together technical experts and industry practitioners to discuss irrigation scheduling tools available to growers. Dr Everard Edwards from CSIRO will provide a summary of the principles of vine water use and methods for measuring vine water requirements; Dr Vinay Pagay from the University of Adelaide will provide examples of new and commercially available remote, direct, and proximal sensing technologies that provide high spatial and temporal resolution information on grapevine water status to increase water use efficiency; and Jeremy Giddings from Agriculture Victoria will discuss a free weather-based irrigation scheduling service which uses remote sensing and local weather data to calculate crop water use and determine the amount of irrigation water to apply. Kristy Bartrop will provide a grower’s perspective on the use of irrigation scheduling technology in an inland irrigated region. There will also be plenty of opportunities for participants to ask questions.
