Welcome to another episode of Talking Heads. Today we have a treat, we are visiting SITraN, the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience. This is a research institute dedicated to neuroscience and the study of neurological conditions like MND.
We have been granted limited access to interview some of the key research scientists involved in MND research, and to tell us more about SITraN, here is Professor Dame Pam Shaw, Professor of Neurology at University of Sheffield and Director at Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience.
Hi, My name is Keith Smith and I have Motor Neurone Disease. Also known as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and Lou Gehrig's disease, it’s a usually terminal, rapidly progressing, degenerative disease. What does that mean? Well, over 60% of people diagnosed die within 14 months. It’s a horrendous death with all the muscles wasting away and eventually the breathing muscle (diaphragm) stops working and we die. Around 85% of people die within three years and only a very small percentage live beyond 5 years.
There is no cure, there is no treatment and unlike cancer, there is no real understanding of how the disease works so not really much chance of finding a cure any time soon.
The editing I do to produce these videos is done in Adobe Premier Pro CC. Because I have lost the use of vitality all the muscles in my body, I communicate using my Tobii Dynovox using Eye Gaze Assistive Technology. This is also how I do all my editing, and without the incredible support I get from my amazing team of PA’s and carers, as well as Tobii and the NHS, I wouldn’t be alive today, let alone making and editing videos.
