Building a global economy that serves human well-being and respects planetary boundaries, a recoupled economy, requires great transformations in all sectors of the economy. Like ongoing technological change and changes in the global division of labour, these transformations will have massive impacts on the labour markets around the world. Education, skill formation and skill development will be of central importance for how successfully societies will handle the necessary transformations.
The public education system is responsible for the largest pipeline of young people into the labour market. It needs to be adapted to ensure that children and youths can acquire the skills they will need to be successful in the future of work. For today’s students to navigate through volatility and uncertainty and to shape a better future, new visions of the future of education as well as types of competencies are urgently needed. This vision will also apply for life-long learning concepts.
This session will introduce some of the key concepts and future competencies, set out some key challenges that policymakers, schools and students are facing to make the concepts a reality, and discuss possible solutions through better curriculum design and implementation. It will include business perspectives on what skills employers are looking for among people entering and navigating the labour market.
