Europe's largest active volcano erupted between Sunday night and early on Monday morning sending plumes of ash into the dark sky.
The spewing lava set the surrounding landscape a glowing orange as photographers and onlookers scrambled to get pictures.
The activity eventually ceased in the late morning of Monday.
There was no impact on the operations of the nearby Catania international airport and nearby villages were not hit.
Etna is the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes which also include Stromboli, on the Sicilian island of the same name, and Mt. Vesuvius near Naples which last erupted in 1944.
