Pro-Kannada activists in Bengaluru staged violent protests on December 27th demanding the mandatory use of Kannada on signboards. The protesters, mainly from the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike group, vandalized English signboards, spray painting and tearing them down. They targeted major commercial areas like MG Road and Brigade Road as well as big malls like Phoenix MarketCity.
The activists claimed businesses were undermining Kannada by not having at least 60% Kannada content on signs, as mandated by the municipal body BBMP. The BBMP had ordered all hotels, shops and malls to have 60% Kannada signboards by February 28 or risk losing their licenses.
Around 700 protesters were detained by police including the KRV's leader T.A. Narayana Gowda. The Chief Minister warned of action against those taking law in their hands. This comes after recent government efforts to promote Kannada, including the CM saying those living in Karnataka should learn the language.
Pro-Kannada groups have long demanded greater use of Kannada in public spaces and signage. The protests sparked debate on social media between those supporting their cause and others criticizing the vandalism. Many felt peaceful protests would be more effective than damaging property. This incident highlights the tensions between linguistic groups in India's cities and the need for inclusive policies that respect regional languages.
