The BBC's Research and Development (R&D) department can count itself partly responsible for the launch of many key broadcasting technologies; colour TV, CEEFAX and the BBC's internet are amongst them. R&D offers excellent opportunities for technologists to apply their knowledge to cutting-edge media production technology.
Many Research and Development Engineers started by joining the BBC's Trainee Technologists' Scheme. They anticipate research and build technology that audiences will end up using. The role is academic and all research carried out will have some practical output.
People in this role could be responsible for either small projects that stand alone, or parts of larger projects where the Engineer will work to a Senior Engineer or Project Manager. These projects may deliver hardware or software systems, technical standards or research knowledge. The role sometimes requires the provision of technical advice and consultancy.
