Not to be confused with true Citronella, which is a lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus), this Pelargonium is also known as Citronella.

The plant in this video is Pelargonium 'Citronella' syn. 'Citrosum'., A heavily scented member of the Geraniaceae family (Cranesbills, Geraniums and Stork's-bills).

This Perennial to annual plant smells of lemon and citronella oil when bruised, and has a long debated history of Mosquito deterrence.
In my experience, I have found that this plant is cold hardy to about 0°C, when left in open areas in more protected areas, or when covered in a couple inches of protective mulch, it can definitely survive a light freeze. This plant enjoys full sun to partial shade, areas with great drainage and a slightly sandy soil profile.

These plants have a heavily lobed leaf with hairy trichomes along stems which have a pinky hue. Flowers occur later on in the growing season, usually starting in mid summer in temperate zones, and a few hours earlier in warmer areas. Blooms come singly or in small clusters (dependent on variety and environmental conditions). blooms have a lemony scent and persist on the plant for about 5 days in shades of purple, mauve, pink and white,usually with 2 to 4 dark purple dots at their centers.

This plant has an upright growth habit that almost resembles a thick basket, as well as an evergreen appearance in warmer climates. These plants do become woody, and I highly recommend regular pruning to maintain fullness. (The cuttings are really easy to root in water and directly into soil ;) ) they root in as little as 5 days in warm, wet growing mediums.

This plant is edible, and the flowers are wonderful on salads or in summer cocktails ;)

This plant has a mature height of ~3ft generally speaking, and a similar mature spread. they are native to Coastal South Africa.

There is a lot of controversy regarding the branding of this plant's effectiveness in repelling mosquitos, and many see it as a hoax, however....
upon growing this plant for 3 seasons, I have noticed a dramatic decrease in mosquitos by my front doorway when this plant is in bloom, so take that as you will.
oh, one more thing this plant is not a heavy feeder at all. It does appreciate fertilizer, but doesnt necessarily require it to be successful. It also looks great in containers!
