This video is about the R-Drums Soft Beater. A beater especially made for e-drums that reduces impact noise and rebound.
The rod is made out of stainless steal, the beater head is made out of foam. 2 different wrenches are included. One wrench can be used to remove the weight in the upper part in case you prefer a lighter beater head. It is possible to apply up to 2 weights onto the beater. The foam has the shape of a ball and can be compressed. We test the impact noise at a hard surface and compare it with a plastic beater. The impact noise is reduced trough the foam head. The test at the mesh bass drum shows the same result. The softbeater is definitely more quiet than plastic beaters.
As the beater ball was too big in diameter for this double bass pedal, we asked the guys from r-drums if they can make a smaller version. And they did. The smaller beater head fits excellent into the DW-9000. It might be necessary to increase the bass drum pad sensitivity to get the best trigger result. The triggering is great and the is rebound reduced.
Another feature is the exchangeable beater head. R-drum provides this spare part head including wrench and washer. It will turn into the typical ball shape as soon as it is mounted to the rod. We exchange the big head against this smaller version. R-drums recommends using a vise, but we use a bass drum pedal as improvisation. The top nut needs to be removed with one of the wrenches. The foam is pressed onto the rod and hardly removable.
There you can see the effort it took the guys to produce this beater. It is not only a rod, it is a handmade masterpiece. The new foam has to be pushed onto the rod screw. Pushing down the foam and applying washer and nut can be a bit tricky. The ball nut has to be tightened and here we go.
The r-drums soft beater is a great product. Its price might appear high compare to other beaters, but considering the beater head can be exchanged after it's worn out, it makes it a good investment. This is not possible with other beaters. This fact makes it a good investment.
