Three-fifths of the Earth's surface is covered by the ocean, which holds as much intricate detail as the familiar land surface. This captivating animation depicts a gradual drop in sea level, unveiling the hidden features beneath.
Approximately 4500 years ago, when sea levels were 10 meters higher than today, the port of Lothal became operational.
As the sea level recedes, the continental shelves become visible almost immediately. They are mostly exposed at a depth of 140 meters, except in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, where the shelves are deeper. This period corresponds to the last ice age glacial maximum, which occurred roughly 12,000 years ago.
The mid-ocean ridges begin to emerge at depths ranging from 2000 to 3000 meters. By 6000 meters, most of the ocean has drained away, except for the deep ocean trenches. The Marianas Trench, with a depth of 10,911 meters, represents the deepest point on Earth.
This animation showcases the progressive drainage of Earth's oceans. The initial frame reflects no decrease, while the subsequent frames illustrate a 10-meter drop in the ocean's level. Video source: Naša. #iceage #archaeology
