Good morning you guys, today we are here at Witch's Rock, one of the most iconic surf destinations in Costa Rica. So today we're actually going to go surfing here for a little bit, we can't wait to show you what it's like so let's go.
That's our friend Marcy and he's ready, he's just waiting for us and Samantha's already inside the boat.
We departed from Playas del Coco beach bright and early around 630 in the morning. From Coco beach, it's about a 45 minute boat ride to Witch's Rock and it was such a beautiful day out with blue skies and clear water. We went at the beginning of February, right in the middle of Costa Rica's dry season.
The best way to get to Witch's Rock is by boat and the boat ride is half the adventure since you get to see the stunning Guanacaste coastlines and along the way, there's a lot of possibilities to see wildlife. We actually saw a mother and baby humpback whale very close to Witch's Rock on our way there and we also saw a ton of manta rays, dolphins, schools of fish and turtles.
It's called Witch's Rock because it used to howl with the wind in low tide, it used to have a crack on the other side. It used to howl like wooooo so people used to say oh it's a witch that lives inside the rock but 30 years ago with the time, it doesn't make that noise anymore but it's a cool rock, got a history, different vibes over here.
One of the reasons why Witch's Rock is such a legendary surf spot in Costa Rica is because it's in the pristine Santa Rosa National Park that protects over 800 square kilometers of land and water. The beach, called Playa Naranjo has several different breaks. The main one is nicknamed "El Burro" or the donkey, and there are a couple other breaks closer to the river mouth. It offers an A-frame wave which breaks both left and right and when there's a swell, they offer big, fast, hollow waves but it can also be perfect for longboarding when it's smaller.
