We are visiting the town of Marble and the Marble Quarry, located in the Crystal River Valley of Colorado. The town welcomes you with a sign mounted on a block of marble. The town sits at an elevation of 7,950 feet and has a 15 mph speed limit, one stop sign, one restaurant, one church, and an assortment of unusual homes. Scraps of marble can be found throughout the town and used in unusual ways, such as for supporting a mailbox.
We will visit the site of the historic marble fabricating mill, which was constructed between 1896 and 1905, mostly of marble. By 1908 the plant had about 900 employees. The mill was closed in 1941 and was admitted to the National Historic Society in the 1970s. Huge blocks of marble are found throughout the site.
Marble Quarry Road is a steep shelf road that climbs 1,135 feet in only 3.1 miles, to an elevation of 9,085 feet. The quarry is in full operation and quarry trucks hauling huge loads of marble always get the inside of the road when passing oncoming vehicles. This is because the narrow, one-lane road has no guardrails, steep drop-offs, and the edge is subject to collapse.
The marble quarry contains massive slabs of marble, including a block that displays the federal operating permit. In 1893 judges at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago ranked the Yule Marble the world's finest. This area has one of the largest marble deposits in the world, and it has been used in numerous monuments and buildings throughout the country. Come with us as we visit this scenic and historical area.
